Consumer Rights in Norway
Norway has some of the strongest consumer protections in Europe. Here's what you need to know.
Purchases & Complaints
You have 5 years to complain about defective products. The seller has the burden of proof for the first 2 years (Consumer Purchase Act § 27, § 18).

- 2-year reversed burden of proof
- 5-year complaint period for durable goods
Rental & Housing
Tenants have strong protections under Norwegian law. Landlords cannot evict without valid legal grounds (Tenancy Act § 9-5).
- 3-month notice period (minimum)
- Deposit must be in a separate bank account
- Landlord cannot raise rent freely
Online Shopping & Returns
You have 14 days to return items bought online – no reason needed (Right of Withdrawal Act § 20).
- 14-day cooling-off period
- Seller must clearly inform about return rights
- Full refund within 14 days of return
